Red Light District

Här finner man party, drinkar, sex till salu, och ett oändligt folkvimmel. Butikerna här har alltifrån barnförbjudna videofilmer, tidningar och sexleksaker. Red Light District är något av en sexuell nöjespark och tas inte alltid på alltför stort allvar av de mängder av turister som besöker området varje dag. Red Light District är kanske överraskande nog ett pittoreskt och vackert kvarter. Ljuset från de kända röda fönsterna reflekteras mot de antika kanalbyggnaderna och färgar även broarna och kanalen röda i mörkret. Även om det anses vara ett säkert område, är det alltid viktigt att man är försiktig och uppmärksam speciellt då man promenerar på de mindre och mindre befolkade gatorna. Det råder att strikt förbud mot fotografering.

Leidseplein

Torget Leidseplein är ett av Amsterdams populäraste ställen för nattliv. Det finns ett oändligt utbud av restauranger, barer, coffeeshops, biosalonger och teatrar i närheten av det dynamiska och upplyftande Leidseplein. På varma sommarkvällar kan man se hur både turister och lokala invånare njuter av de många uteserveringarna. Man kan ofta se hur gatumusikanter, jonglörer, eldslukare och andra spontana artister uppträder på torget och detta kan hålla på fram till småtimmarna.

That said, most people in the know consider Café Chris, in the Bloemstraat, to be Amsterdam's oldest, still operating café. Café Chris opened its doors in 1624. One story says that it was built as a 'lunch facility' for the builders of the Westertoren. (The Westerkerk was built between 1620 and 1632, but the 85-meter tower was not finished until 1638). At the time, the café has separate entrances: one for 'workers,' and one for 'masters.'
Another story claims that the workers received their wages in this café. If so, there is no word on whether this was a brilliant marketing move on the part of the owner, or simply a matter of convenience for the contractor.
Whatever the case may be, today Café Chris is as popular as ever. While Café Chris can not lay claim to being the smallest pub in Amsterdam, space is at a premium. The door to the men's toilet looks like it would lead to the street, but the small room is located in the alcove created by an outdoor set of stairs. This bit of architectural cleverness has not left a whole lot of room, however.
Thus one of the café's curious features is the fact that the water supply - and flushing cord - for the men's toilet are located outside the toilet facilities, and thus inside the bar. And yes, people do make use of that fact.

Karpershoek sits on the corner of Marterlaarsgracht, right opposite Centraal Station. I've often ridden past on a tram and looked at its, rather modest, sign claiming to be "one of the oldest" pubs in Amsterdam. For twenty years or abouts. And never gone in. I had been missing out on a boozer that merits inclusion for several reasons.
Dating from 1606, its oldest pub claim seems quite sound. Go inside and it's easy to believe. It oozes character from every floorboard. All the esssential elements of a classic bown café are there: woodwork whose original shade is impossible to determine, a seemingly eandom collection of old artefacts and prints scattered around and a chirpy Amsterdammer behind the bar. Talking of Amsterdammers, they have placed between the door and bar counter. Not the human kind, of course. I mean one of the metal bollards (marked with the city's trademark 3 X's) that stop motorists parking even more irresponsibly than they usually do.
For its location, it seems remarkably well-frequented by the human sort of Amsterdammer. Quite an achievement down at tourist central.
The ten or so bottled beers make up for the crappy draught selection. Especially the price of the bottled beers. The price list - very honestly on large display outside - says €2.25 for "foreign beer". I thought that would be the price of the cheapest. My gob was totally smacked when that's all I was charged for a Westmalle Tripel. That's the cheapest you'll find it in town. Anything under €3 is a good deal. Oddly, a bolleke of Koninck costs more - €3.tus. In vestibulum ante ipsum primis in faucibus orci luctus et ultrices posuere luctus eget.
